What We Do In The Shadows (2014)

Co-written & directed by Taika Waititi & Jemaine Clement, this horror-comedy mockumentary about vampire roommates strikes the perfect balance between charm and gore. This movie launched Waititi’s international career, and the movie went on to spark two TV spin offs (What We Do In The Shadows on FX and Wellington Paranormal on New Zealand’s TVNZ 2) with a sequel in the works (called We’re Wolves).

What works so well with this story is the mix of improvised dialogue with intricate sets and costume design. They really nailed the aesthetic of decaying riches, everything looks both ornate and rotted. I also love the mix of practical effects with CGI. The way they blend with the mockumentary filming style makes them seem almost real, in a paradoxical way. It’s a sweet movie about friendship and love… and vampires.
