This movie cracked open my rib cage and squeezed all my organs into a pulpy mess. It’s worth the pain, but like, it will hurt, a lot. This family story in two parts uses absolutely every tool in the toolbox to put you in the shoes of the characters. The soundtrack is flawlessly integrated with the soundscape, and the camerawork is masterful. Director Trey Edward Shults even embedded his screen play with different fonts, colours and music cues. He worked closely with lead actors Kelvin Harrison Jr, Sterling K Brown and Taylor Russell to develop their characters, and they’ve all have spoken in depth about the care and work they put into their roles. The fact that this movie got 0 love from the 2019–2020 awards season (no nominations from the Oscars, Golden Globes, not even SAG) is trash, and I think I’m just gonna talk about this movie every year during the Oscars 😏
