The Kid Detective (2020)

The Kid Detective is a dark comedy / mystery / neo-noir about a private investigator haunted by his glory days as a child prodigy. Adam Brody is at his best as Abe Applebaum, a man stuck in a state of arrested development who refuses to grow up. The mystery itself is really well crafted. The story culminates in a surprisingly upsetting conclusion that works perfectly with the rest of the film.

Writer Director Evan Morgan does an excellent job of balancing the tone of the story. Like so many movies that try to juggle multiple genres, Morgan crafted a satisfying balance between comedy and drama that entertains the audience while honouring the characters. Personally I find the final moments of the movie to be a real gut punch. Growing up is painful, at any stage of life.
