Sorry to Bother You (2018) 📞✊🐴

This movie is fucking amazing! It’s sincere and hilarious and anti-capitalist in all the right ways and one of my absolute favourites of all time.

Writer-director-producer Boots Riley describes his creation as “an absurdist dark comedy with aspects of magical realism & science fiction inspired by the world of telemarketing”. It’s a visual kaleidoscope packed with details that make rewatches a must. The script expertly weaves elements of code-switching, toxic masculinity & labour rights into a story that is fierce and kind. The costumes were meticulously curated by Deirdra Govan, the looks for Tessa Thompson’s character Detroit (those earrings!) being a standout. The score is equally mind blowing — it was written by Riley’s band The Coup and Tune-Yards, and features lead actor LaKeith Stanfield on the kick-ass track OYAHYTT. The supporting cast is also incredibly well crafted, including Terry Crews, Danny Glover, Kate Berlant & sweet angel Steven Yeun.

Boots Riley originally wrote the script in 2012. He ended up participating at the Sundance Institute labs, which connected his script with funders. He made sure to shoot the film in his hometown of Oakland, California, and hired a lot of people from the community to work on the set. Artist Spy Emerson, who built the 12 foot statue of a man fucking a horse (yes), talked about how much she loved working on the film. “Boots called me and said ‘you’re the only person I can think of to do this’ and of course I was absolutely charmed by that notion. It’s an honor to be thought of as an artist that stands out doing giant and impossibly weird things.”
