Sleeping With The Enemy (1991)

It’s 90’s thriller week, I’ve decided, and what better way to kick it off with this not-good-but-weirdly-accurate “romantic thriller” (?) starring America’s sweetheart Julia Roberts. Protagonist Laura fakes her death to escape her hyper-controlling husband, and starts a new life across the country, still she can’t shake the feeling that he may still be put there. He’s obviously a villain, based on his hitler mustache alone, and insists on a house with evenly arranged hand towels and a perfectly organized pantry. Most of the movie follows Laura as she meets a new love interest who gets kinda weird about apple pie (romance in the 90s was creepy), and wears many gorgeous floral patterns and high waisted jeans.

This movie is memorable because of Julia Roberts’ performance. Even though everything else is kinda scholcky and cartoony, she is solid in her portrayal of someone with PTSD after an abusive relationship. I also appreciated that the cops do absolutely nothing to help her, in fact they never even appear on screen. Laura is a survivor through and through, and I love her for it. Also this movie is the reason I will never, ever straighten my towels or organize my kitchen cabinets. That’s for psychos!
