Rise Roar Revolt!

Legendary Indian director S.S. Rajamouli has shaken up the action world with this fictionalized blockbuster about two Indian revolutionaries (Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem) who take on the British colonizers. The Telugu-language movie is the most expensive Indian film ever made, and even though its release was delayed by COVID, it broke all kinds of box office records by grossing roughly $150 million (USD) worldwide, over double its budget.

I don’t know much about Bollywood, and I know even less about Tollywood, but I do know that watching RRR was the most fun I’ve had with an action movie since Mad Max Fury Road. The action is mind-blowing, the drama is epic, and the music absolutely incredible. Plus, how could I ever resist a bromance between two handsome, muscular men who joyously beat the living shit out of British occupiers? These days, I find a lot of joy watching stories about people absolutely annihilating their oppressors, and who fight for what’s right instead of what’s legal. Not for any particular real world reason of course, just a coincidence, obvi.
