JENNIFER’S BODY 😈🎸🍴
“Hell is a teenage girl”
All I wanna do today is dive into this beloved horror flick that was done SO DIRTY by the 2009 marketing team at 20th Century Fox. Director Karyn Kusama, writer Diablo Cody and actor Megan Fox gave multiple interviews about this infuriating campaign 10 years after its release. The film was made by women about teenage girls, but 20th Century marketed the whole thing to teenage boys. Which… is an odd choice, given how this movie unfolds.
This is a classic for any horror/cult fan. I love the exploration of the love/hate relationship between Needy (Amanda Seyfried) and Jennifer (Megan Fox) — it’s a very real dynamic that I hardly ever see play out on screen. I also love the narrative! It’s so well crafted, and gorey, and hilarious, and upsetting. The horror of the movie isn’t just “Jennifer’s a demon”, it’s also how the whole community gaslights Needy, even though she knows something is terribly wrong. It’s that all-too-real feeling of being trapped out in the open that really hits hard. When I saw this in theaters way back when, I felt so clearly the intent of the filmmakers — that they assumed women would be in the audience, as opposed to so many other movies that only cater to a very specific male audience.
Anyway, Adam Brody plays a terrible person and Megan Fox eats people. It’s great.
