Hot Fuzz (2007)
“The greater good, precisely!”
Simon Pegg plays an overly enthusiastic police officer in Edgar Wright’s ode to / satire of cop action movies. Hot Fuzz is considered to be the 2nd movie in his “Cornetto Trilogy” (sandwiched between the zombie horror/comedy Shaun of the Dead and the sci-fi/coming-of-age story World’s End) and is thoroughly entertaining, even though it’s kinda copaganda. Wright perfectly understands the genre and plays with the camera, editing and music to make the most of the story. The writing is super concise, and many moments gain extra layers on the rewatch. It’s also packed with excellent performances from all your favourite British actors, including Olivia Coleman, Bill Nighy, Jim Brodbent, Bill Bailey and a delightfully wicked Timothy Dalton.
Is the hero kind of a fascist who learns to be less fascistic when he comes face to face with super fascists? Yes. Yes, the morality of Hot Fuzz here is a little muddled, despite the excellent writing and use of montage. Ultimately, the protagonist’s overly-zealous vigilance is justified in the film, which I don’t love. But what really makes this movie special, to me, is that peoples’ heads get exploded. It’s incredibly graphic, and bloody, and I am but a humble horror geek. I cannot say no to such gratuitous, celebratory gore.
