Fresh is a horror-comedy that just dropped last Friday on Hulu, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People) and Sebastian Stan. It’s the kinda movie where the less you know going into it, the better, and I can honestly say I had a blast watching it. Stan makes a meal out of every scene and Edgar-Jones is a force to be reckoned with.

This is director Mimi Cave’s and writer Lauryn Kahn’s first feature, and they really flex their skills with how much they pack into a relatively simple concept. They definitely are aware of the audience’s expectations of the genre, and do a great job of subverting them. The themes are really strong (commodification of women, vulnerability in dating, friendship) and the characters are all well fleshed out. Some of the visuals are stunningly visceral, which make the viewing experience quite squeamish. I particularly loved the design of the villain’s house! Production designer Jennifer Morden chose a plethora of gooey, fleshy oranges, pinks and reds to adorn the home, creating a fantastic contrast with the rest of the movie. For a movie about something so gross, the vibes really were excellent!
