Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022) đź‘€đźŚâš«
“We’re all small and stupid”
The Daniels (Dan Kwan & Daniel Scheinert) have written and directed one of the most ambitious, heartwarming, absurd movies I’ve seen in a long time. They stretched every penny of their $25 million budget to build a multi-verse family drama / action / sci-fi epic that champions empathy and compassion in the face of depression and nihilism. I’ve been trying to write about this movie for days, but honestly I think the less said, the better. Michelle Yeo, Stephanie Hsu and Ke Huy Quan are joys to watch, as is Jamie Lee Curtis as the anal retentive IRS analyst. There’s a painfully beautiful sequence that will please Wong Kar-wei fans, multiple odes to Jackie Chan’s legendary stunts, a static shot of two rocks made me cry and there’s some hot-dog finger situations that made their way into my subconscious and now sometimes hotdog fingers turn up in my dreams. It’s just a very well made, very unique, absolutely bonkers movie and I don’t regret watching it.
