Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)

“I… have service.”

When a group of friends lock themselves into a mansion to party during a hurricane, the atmosphere sours when paranoia gets the better of them. The cast is so much fun to watch (Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Rachel Sennott, plus Lee Pace! and I guess Pete Davidson is also fine) and they all play off of each other in a way that adds both comedy and tension as the movie descends into chaos. Underneath the music drops and the gen z quips is an excellent “whodunit” story about class, wealth and all the lies we tell just to fit in.

This is the latest hit from independent film distributor A24, but the movie’s raw dynamic energy makes it stand apart, thanks to its unusual production style. The original story was written by Kristen Roupenian, and then adapted by writer Sarah DeLappe with the input of director Halina Reijn. On set, Reijn and DOP Jasper Wolf created a documentary/theater style production structure that let the actors drop into scenes as their characters and bring a lot of their own ideas and improve to their performances. In a conversation with Collider, Reijn explained “I’m 46, I want to make a movie about Gen Z? I better open myself up completely to these young people.”
