“This is perfectly natural”

Barbarian is the debut feature of writer-director Zach Cregger about the absolute worst Air BnB experience anyone could have! Cregger was inspired by the very good book “The Gift of Fear” to write something that touched on every red flag a woman could encounter (ok, but did he never talk to his women friends?!), and then played around with the characters and genre to build something unique. Georgina Campbell and Bill Skarsgard have a great dynamic on screen that was a fun mix of tension and humour, and Justice Long nails his character.

Cregger plays with a perspective shift that I really enjoyed, though it may not be everyone’s cup of tea. It gives The People Under The Stairs vibes, maybe a little bit of Candyman too, and though this story goes off the walls, I appreciated the link between invasive, predatory people and predatory suburban land development. I also really liked how they used in-frame light sources to light the later half of the movie! The camera worked really well with the actors to amp up the tension, often emphasizing the space over the people and lingering on the darkest corners. Maybe I would have been disappointed if I’d watched the trailers before buying my ticket, but I went in cold and had an absolute blast.
