Annihilation (2018)
“What was I? Was I you? Were you me?”
Director Alex Garland’s first feature film Ex Machina was a tough act to follow, but four years later he was back with this weird haunting movie that kinda fucked me up! The story follows a group of scientists exploring a mysterious “shimmer” that is slowly consuming the earth. Thematically it explores self destruction, echos, and the conflict between inner/secret vs exterior/public identities, but that’s a wild oversimplification. The best thing about this movie is the utterly bizarre and eerie atmosphere. Garland teamed up with Andrew Whitehurst, who led the visual effects team on Ex Machina, to create this aesthetic of high strangeness. Add a truly haunting film score and you have something that will stick in your guts long after the movie is over. Plus you get to see lots of pretty shimmery colours, as well as a bunch of women in STEM facing off against a weird bear, and Natalie Portman fire a machine gun without even blinking!
